Amsterdam can boast yet another five-star hotel: the Hyatt Regency. This seven-story hotel is situated in the former Emma Children’s Hospital, which has been fully redeveloped. The hotel has been perfectly designed down to the last detail, as is clear, for example, by the terrace where the deck has been finished in Esthec® Terrace decking. This composite terrace material perfectly complements the wooden floor of the restaurant and bar of the hotel; like these indoor areas, the outdoor terrace has been finished in a herringbone pattern. This is the first time Esthec® Terrace has been laid in this pattern. The ultimate result is a hotel that is just as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside.
As one would expect with a five-star hotel, the Hyatt Regency offers the highest level of luxury. The hotel has 211 rooms, including 15 suites. On the ground floor you will find the reception desk and lobby, which flow seamlessly over into the Mama Makan Dutch-Indonesian fusion restaurant and bar. This culinary heart of the hotel, which can seat up to 150 guests, has its own entrance and a spacious terrace. The Hyatt Regency also boasts a 24-hour fitness centre with sauna, and more than 500 square metres of flexible meeting and event facilities, including a nearly 200m2 ballroom. The hotel has a Regency Club and is the first Hyatt-branded hotel in the Netherlands to have an exclusive Club Lounge.
No detail of the hotel has been left to chance, as can be seen in the tasteful furnishings of the guest rooms, restaurant and lobby. Generously inspired by the nearby botanical gardens and the Artis Amsterdam Royal Zoo, the lush greenery of the hotel would be hard to miss. The lobby is rich in plants, including a 12-metre-long ‘living green wall’, and the hotel has a beautiful courtyard garden designed by Marnix Tavenier of landscape design agency MTX landschappen.
Elegant herringbone pattern
Tavenier also designed the terrace of the Hyatt Regency. The designer selected Esthec® Terrace for the decking because of how it perfectly complemented the beautiful wooden floor of the Mama Makan restaurant and bar. The Esthec® Terrace decking provides a seamless flow from indoors to outdoors largely thanks to the elegant herringbone pattern used when laying the terrace deck. According to Tavenier, Esthec® Terrace decking is the perfect material for the terrace of the Hyatt Regency: ‘The boards have lovely colour nuances lending the terrace a natural look.
At the same time, Esthec® Terrace decking has major advantages over wood. The boards do not wear out and still look good as new after many years of use, and the decking requires little maintenance. What’s also important is that, where wood decking quickly becomes slippery when wet, Esthec® Terrace remains slip-resistant in the rain.’
The terrace decking was supplied and laid by landscaping company OutdoorNL, which was ‘a pleasant challenge’ according to co-owner Matthijs van Noppen. ‘This was the first time we used a herringbone design with Esthec® Terrace, and the result is stunning. The terrace deck uses 10cm-wide boards, and even the bench on the terrace is made of Esthec® Terrace, in this case 17.5cm-wide boards. This difference in width creates a cheerful, playful effect on the terrace. The colour of the boards – Mood – which we provide in three different colour tones, is also beautiful; it nicely complements the green ceramic tiles of the walls.’
Immense freedom of design
Esthec® Terrace comes in nine standard colours and three board widths, which can be perfectly combined. This variety offers architects and designers an immense measure of freedom in the design. They are not stuck with just one traditional colour, for example: they have nine colours to choose from. And thanks to the various widths, landscape architects and designers are liberated from the standard board patterns of traditional materials and can conceive a design that is truly their own.
And Esthec® Terrace decking has even more to offer. It does not warp like wood or PVC, it is splinter free, and it feels wonderfully comfortable on bare feet. Furthermore, the lightweight, patented click system makes Esthec® Terrace easy to install. Other product features are the close spacing of the boards (2.5cm) and how little the material expands: a 3m boards only expands 0.36mm at a temperature variation of 10 degrees C.
